A tree is a decades-long decision, and most of the expensive problems homeowners run into — a limb hanging over the roof, a lifted sidewalk, a dead ash that has to come down in a hurry — trace back to a species that was never right for the spot. Mature size, root behavior, lifespan, and pest pressure vary enormously from one species to the next. This guide covers the trees you are most likely to already have in the yard: how big they get, how long they live, when they should be pruned, what tends to kill them, and how their roots behave near foundations, walkways, and utility lines.

Oak, Maple & Willow
Oaks are the long game. Most species reach 60 to 80 feet with a spread nearly as wide, add height slowly, and can live anywhere from 100 to 300 years. They also carry the most weight per limb of any common yard tree, so structural pruning while the tree is young pays for itself later. Maples grow faster and top out lower at 40 to 70 feet, with an 80 to 150 year lifespan, but silver and Norway maples send out shallow surface roots that will lift a concrete sidewalk or patio slab within 15 to 20 years of planting. Willows are the fastest and the shortest lived of the three; their water-seeking roots go after sewer laterals, septic fields, and drain tile, so they belong well away from any of it and never within about 50 feet of a house.
Prune all three in the dormant season, late winter before bud break. In regions where oak wilt is present, do not prune oaks in spring at all — the beetles that spread the fungus are active then and a fresh cut is an open invitation. Maples bleed sap from late-winter cuts, which looks alarming but does not harm the tree. Watch oaks for anthracnose in wet springs, and watch maples for verticillium wilt, tar spot, and spotted lanternfly in areas where it has established.

Ash, Elm & Birch
Ash is the hardest call most homeowners face right now. Emerald ash borer has moved through most of the eastern and midwestern states, and an untreated ash in an infested county is usually dead within two to four years of the first symptoms: a thinning upper canopy, D-shaped exit holes in the bark, and woodpecker damage on the trunk. Preventive treatment exists and has to be repeated every two to three years, which is worth it for a healthy, well-placed tree and rarely worth it once more than about a third of the canopy is gone. Dead ash goes brittle fast, and brittle wood is dangerous to climb, so waiting also raises the removal price.
American elm tells a similar story with Dutch elm disease, though modern resistant cultivars are worth planting and still give you the classic vase shape at 60 to 80 feet. Birch is a different problem: 40 to 50 feet, only 40 to 60 years of life, shallow roots that resent drought and lawn traffic, and bronze birch borer waiting for any tree that gets stressed. Keep birch mulched and watered, and prune it in late summer rather than late winter, since spring cuts bleed heavily.
Pine, Spruce & Other Conifers
Conifers run 50 to 80 feet tall with a narrow spread and live anywhere from 50 to 150 years depending on species and site. They do not respond to pruning the way broadleaf trees do: cut a branch back below its live foliage and it will not regrow, so the honest scope of work is deadwooding, removing damaged limbs, and raising the lower canopy for clearance. Pines can be shaped by pinching the new spring candles, which is hand work worth doing on a small specimen and not a service worth paying for on a large one.
Prune in late winter, and in regions with bark beetle pressure avoid cutting pines in warm months, when fresh resin draws beetles in. Watch for diplodia tip blight and pine wilt on pines, and cytospora canker, needlecast, and spider mites on spruce. Conifer roots form a wide, shallow plate rather than the ropey surface roots that lift concrete walkways, but that plate is exactly why evergreens fail whole in winter storms — they keep full sail area year round, and saturated soil plus wind is enough to tip one over onto a roof.
Magnolia, Dogwood & Crape Myrtle
Ornamental trees are the ones that can safely go near the house. Dogwood tops out around 20 to 25 feet and lives 30 to 40 years; it is an understory tree, so it does best with afternoon shade and suffers from anthracnose and powdery mildew in humid, crowded plantings. Crape myrtle stays between 15 and 25 feet, tolerates heat and poor soil, and is pruned in late winter. Cutting it back to knuckled stubs every year is topping under another name and does the same damage it would to an oak: weak regrowth, decay at every cut, and a tree that needs more work each season, not less.
Magnolia splits into two very different trees. Star and saucer magnolias behave like ornamentals at 20 to 30 feet, while southern magnolia is a full shade tree at 60 to 80 feet with a heavy, year-round leaf drop. Prune magnolias right after they finish flowering rather than in winter. Roots on all three are fibrous and shallow but small enough in scale that eight to ten feet from a concrete foundation or walkway is normally sufficient clearance.

Hiring Tips
Ask whether an ISA Certified Arborist will be on the job, and ask the contractor to describe the work in ANSI A300 terms — crown cleaning, crown thinning, crown raising, crown reduction, deadwooding, cabling and bracing. Anyone who offers to top a tree has told you what you need to know. For a tree over a house or near a service line, ask whether someone on the crew holds TRAQ, and ask how the company works to ANSI Z133 on the ground; TCIA accreditation is a reasonable shortcut for judging that.
Request a Certificate of Insurance showing both general liability and workers' compensation, and ask for it directly from the insurer rather than from the contractor. Get a written estimate that names the species and the work per tree, states whether debris haul-away and stump grinding are included, and says who pulls the permit — many municipalities protect heritage trees or anything over a set trunk diameter, and that paperwork is the homeowner's problem if nobody claims it. A $150 to $500 arborist consultation before the work is cheap insurance against removing a tree that could have been saved.
